Amish Friendship Bread

Well, I've been doing this long enough now, I think it's blog-worthy. When we went to visit AZ last time my sister Kym gave us the starter and instructions for Amish Friendship bread. The bread is a ten day process from the day you get the starter, to the day you make yourself two loaves and give three starters away.

This is the most amazing bread I have ever tasted, mostly it's just a cake, but somehow better. On the first day you receive it you don't do anything to it. On the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th days you mash the bag and let out the air bubbles, on the 6th day you add milk, sugar, and flour. On the 7th, 8th, and 9th days you mash the bag and let out the bubbles, and on the 10th day you add more milk, sugar and flour, take a four cups of the mixture and put one cup into a zip lock bag. So essentially, you have four Ziploc bags with a cup of starter in each.

Then you figure out who you love, and give a starter to that person. If that person is smart, they will follow the very simple directions and have the best bread of their lives in 10 days. (wink wink) You keep one starter for yourself and then you can make this delicious treat every 10 days.

The only problem with this bread is it really uses a lot of Ziploc baggies! But it is sooooo worth it!

The finished/tasty product. Mmmmmmh!

Kym and Kym, dreaming about friendship bread.... okay maybe not, but if I had tasted it at that point I would have been!

  3. I just wanted to add that not only is Amish Friendship Bread delicious (I didn't know my taste buds could dance), but the 10-day process of making it is actually really fun. I get a thrill everytime I mash the bags or empty the air out. It's exciting and the anticipation of the forthcoming bread is a daily treat. It's kinda therapeutic similar to both a stress toy and keeping house plants alive. Did I mention it was delicious. I'm normally not a big cake or bread eater, but I have a hard time walking by a loaf of this stuff without buttering up a slice. I owe it to my taste buds. They've been good to me.
